The signed route from here (there are plenty of options) continues the way down in slightly under an hour, to Grindelwald (7hr 30min), much of the way through meadows. Alternatively you could catch a bus.
GRINDELWALD (1034M)
Formerly known as the âglacier villageâ, Grindelwald has become one of Switzerlandâs busiest and best-known resorts and mountaineering centres, alive and thriving equally in winter as in summer. Though shrinking fast now, its glaciers were subjected to much scientific interest in the 18th century, and 100 years later attracted the attention of inquisitive tourists. Seeing how distant from Grindelwald these glacial remnants are today, itâs hard to believe that in 1723 Sir Horace Mann reported that an exorcist had been employed to halt the advance of the ice which was threatening to obliterate the village. Many of todayâs visitors are more attracted to the famous Jungfraujoch Railway, which rises to Kleine Scheidegg, then tunnels through the Eiger to emerge at the Joch (or saddle) below the Jungfrau at an altitude of 3454m. Itâs the highest railway in Europe â and probably the most expensive.
Other Grindelwald attractions include the exceptional scenery and very fine walking prospects. A walking holiday based here would provide sufficient variety and stimulating exercise to last the whole summer, while for trekkers tackling the Alpine Pass Route it makes an obvious choice for a spell of rest and recuperation before moving on.
